Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. – Colossians 3:12-14
Think about this: God chose you, set you apart, and deeply loves you. These truths should make a difference in how you live. Your life should reflect the characteristics of the One who so richly invests in you.
We live in a society that is fashion conscious. People identify the rich and famous by what they wear and who designed it. In these verses, the apostle Paul reminded us that we are identified in the same way. We belong to our Designer, and He expects us to put on His garments.
This may seem easier said than done. You can’t look like Jesus in your own strength. Only the truth and the power of the gospel and gift of God’s forgiveness makes this lifestyle possible. But it is possible – by His grace.
This list closely resembles the fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23. Determine to be merciful, kind, humble, meek, long-suffering, forbearing, forgiving, and loving; after all, that’s how Your Designer designed you to be.
