Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.  You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.  No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made know to you.” – John 15:13-15

There is no greater love than the love of the Father, expressed in the incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection of the Son, Jesus Christ.  He did this to show His amazing grace and love to the whole world.  The “if you do whatever I command” part of this passage is not placing a conditional statement on the love of God.  Rather, it offers the believer not a distant relationship but the path to an abiding one.

Jesus does not want us just to be saved; He wants us to be His friends!  His desire is not that we do whatever He says because of some sort of master-servant relationship.  His desire is that we would know Him so well that we would do what He says because we love and trust Him.

Can you believe the same God who spoke this whole universe into existence with a word wants to be your friend?  This is the great mystery of the gospel.  His grace is not just good; it is amazing!
