“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His lovingkindness is everlasting. Give thanks to the God of gods. For His lovingkindness is everlasting. Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for His lovingkindness is everlasting.” — Psalm 136:1-4
After we arrived in Honduras last Friday, we had enough time to put our luggage in our rooms, eat dinner, and then it was off to an incredible worship service. The verse above was used for a Responsive Reading (though we read through the entire chapter).
We have much to be thankful for … and today we visited an orphanage located in a remote area, approximately one-hour away from the city. The purpose of our visit was to celebrate their birthdays. Many of these children do not know their actual birth date. They were dropped off or acquired without papers.
The government of Honduras shutdown all government source orphanages and does not give aid. Orphanages here are self-run and depend on gifts from people. As we looked around the facility, we noticed that there were lights that didn’t work in the bedrooms because the lights bulbs were out. We were told, “Food is more important.”
We did not get to see the children as they were away “being interviewed” by the government. It is kind of ironic; the government that doesn’t support them yet has to interview the children regarding their “needs”. Nevertheless, we left our “birthday gifts”, cake, piñatas, food, etc. behind so the children could enjoy them when they returned.
There is no doubt … we have much to be thankful for.
