In 1776, our forefathers joined together against tyranny, which eventually lead to 13 colonies becoming the United States of America. On Tuesday, we celebrate the bravery of those men who will become our founding fathers and celebrate the independence we have in this country.

And as we enter into the holiday weekend, I am reminded of the freedom that truly matters, our freedom in Christ. Scripture is full of examples and passages that remind us of our identity in Christ. We are not slaves to sin any longer but new creations.

Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. -1 Peter 2:16

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. -Galatians 5:1

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. -2 Corinthians 3:17

And there are countless other verses and examples of the new life and joy we have when we accept Christ as our Savior.

Unfortunately, there are many Christians who do not enjoy the freedom we have in this country. And many missionaries who travel to countries knowing full well that they have to exchange the freedoms of one country with the oppression of another. It seems counterintuitive but they are answering the call to make disciples, to show others that the oppression of the world cannot suppress the freedom we have in Christ.

As we enjoy the summer holiday and celebrate the independence we have as Americans, let us remember the freedom we find in Christ each and every day.
